Course Description

This course focuses on the common structures used to store data and the standard algorithms for manipulating them. Standard data structures include lists, stacks, queues, trees, heaps, hash tables, and graphs. Standard algorithms include searching, sorting, and traversals. Along with implementation details, students will learn to analyze the time and space efficiency of algorithms and how to select appropriate data structures and algorithms for a specific application. In homework, labs, and programming projects, students will implement their own data structures and make use of existing libraries to solve a variety of computational problems.

Desired Course Outcomes

The learning goals for the lecture and lab are the same -- both are meant to work together to accomplish the goals for the course as a whole. They are:

• Students understand the advantages and disadvantages of fundamental data structures and can implement them using object-oriented design principles.
• Students understand, can implement, and can calculate the time and space efficiency of classic search, sort, and traversal algorithms, including the use of big-O notation.
• Students understand the tradeoffs between different implementations of data structures and algorithms and can make appropriate design decisions based on application data requirements.
• Students can use fundamental data structures and algorithms appropriately to solve a variety of computational problems.
• Students can communicate the results of their work and describe an algorithm.

Course Text

There is no required textbook for this class. There are many exceptional online resources, however, for supplemental help in this class.

Here are some links to free online data structures textbooks:

Grading

• Labs and Projects (45%): Hands-on opportunities to implement and explore concepts from lecture. Projects can be submitted up to one week late, but will not earn any credit for extensions. However, each student has up to two 'freebies' to use over the semester, where they may submit a project up to one week late without penalty (meaning the extensions will count).
• Homework Assignments (10%): Graded out of 10 points, these are typically the hardest questions I'll ask you in the course and should prepare you for the quizzes.
• Quizzes (20%): Short quizzes -- these will typically be in class every other Friday, but may also sometimes be take-home (to be completed online).
• Participation (5%): I expect you to actively contribute to discussions in the classroom. Attend lectures and labs. It is not a problem if you know that you will not be able to attend a lecture, but please email me in advance to let me know.
• Final Exam (20%): A 3-hour opportunity at the end of the semester to demonstrate your ability to answer questions about course material.

How to succeed in this Course

• Labs and Projects: Come to lab ready to focus on the new project. Ask the instructor and TAs for help if you need it.
• Homework Assignments: Please make a strong effort on every exercise, and feel free to ask questions if something isn't clear. Review the homework solutions to check your understanding of the material before the quiz. There is no partial credit for late homeworks because we may go over the answers in class.
• Quizzes: Study for the quizzes by doing the homeworks.
• Final Exam: The final exam will be similar to a large set of quizzes (but written from a more holistic perspective). The best way to study for the final exam is to retake all of the old quizzes. Also, read through your notes and make sure you understand everything in them.
• In general: If you find you are struggling, let us know! We want you to succeed and will do our best to consider each students' individual needs. Additionally, we highly recommend attending the evening TA sessions, but there are also personal tutors available upon request.

Homework assignments and projects may be discussed between your current classmates under the condition that you write up your own answers separately. Feel free to reach out to me about clarification on this.
